ABUJA—The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected Anselm Ojezua’s attempt to disqualify Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming Edo State governorship election on September 21.

In a ruling delivered by Justice Obiora Egwuatu, the court dismissed Ojezua’s lawsuit as premature. The judge emphasized that Ojezua had not exhausted the internal dispute resolution mechanisms of the PDP before filing the case.

Justice Egwuatu supported the argument of Ighodalo’s counsel, Mr. Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, stating that bypassing the party’s Appeal Panel violated PDP’s rules. He underscored the mandatory requirement for aspirants to first seek internal resolution before resorting to litigation.

Ighodalo emerged as the PDP flag-bearer on February 22, securing 577 votes and garnering support as Governor Godwin Obaseki’s favored candidate. Despite Ojezua’s objections over alleged irregularities in the primary process, the court upheld Ighodalo’s candidacy for the election.
