Okonjo-Iweala Applauds Tinubu: ‘His Team Has Worked Tirelessly To Steady Nigeria’s Economy

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday after meeting with the President, the WTO chief described the reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration as moves in the right direction.

However, she stressed the need for robust social safety nets to cushion the impact of these reforms on vulnerable Nigerians.

The former Minister of Finance noted that while economic stability has been achieved, the focus must now shift to driving growth.

Addressing journalists after her closed-door discussion with Tinubu, Okonjo-Iweala said:

“The President and his team have worked hard to stabilise the economy. You cannot improve an economy without first ensuring stability, and he deserves credit for that. The reforms are heading in the right direction.

“The next step is growth. We must grow the economy and put in place social safety nets so that those bearing the brunt of the reforms can receive the support they need to cope with the hardship.”

Her meeting with Tinubu came just two weeks before the end of her first term as WTO Director-General on August 31, 2025, ahead of the start of her second term on September 1, 2025.
