Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the allegation during an interview on Channels Television, where he claimed that irregularities and financial inducements marred the NDC primaries.
He said a House of Representatives aspirant from Anambra State contacted him with what he described as an SOS message, alleging fraud and bribery in the conduct of the exercise.
According to him, the whistle-blower was identified as Obunike Ohaegbu, an aspirant for the Nnewi North and Nnewi South Federal Constituency seat in Anambra State.
Okonkwo alleged that the aspirant was initially told that only expression of interest forms were required at the early stage of the process, before being later informed that additional payments would be necessary.
He further claimed that aspirants were misled into believing that nomination fees would only be paid after candidates had emerged.
Okonkwo said the aspirant accused Peter Obi of leading what he described as a coordinated process that resulted in financial demands from contestants.
“He said Kwankwaso went to his people and made sure that every constituency produced one candidate so that they are not scammed, but Peter Obi told them that all the aspirants should go into the field,” he alleged.
₦10m and ₦20m Alleged Payments
The former Labour Party chieftain further alleged that aspirants in the South-East were later asked to pay additional sums before the primaries.
He claimed that House of Representatives aspirants were allegedly charged ₦10 million, while senatorial aspirants were asked to pay ₦20 million.
“All of them ran into it then Peter Obi and leaders of the South-East NDC caucus went and told them that after paying for the expression of interest forms, you must pay ₦10 million for Reps and ₦20 million for Senate,” he said.
Okonkwo added that many aspirants only discovered they were not the chosen candidates after making the payments.
Hotel Allegation
He also alleged that while the primaries were ongoing, lists of selected candidates had already been prepared elsewhere.
According to him, Peter Obi was allegedly present at a hotel where names of preferred candidates were being compiled.
“While they were doing the primaries, Peter Obi was in the John Wood Hotel writing names of candidates,” he claimed.
Okonkwo further said the aspirant sent him receipts as evidence of payments made.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Peter Obi nor the leadership of the NDC had responded to the allegations.
