Okorocha Reflects On Devastating Building Collapse In Abuja

A five-storey building owned by Rochas Okorocha, the former governor of Imo State, has collapsed on Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja. The incident, which occurred around 9 PM yesterday, caused widespread panic in the neighborhood, as reported by The Nation.

In response, personnel from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command swiftly cordoned off the area. It was revealed that the building was undergoing renovations at the time of the collapse.

Eyewitnesses reported that some individuals might have been trapped inside the building. One witness stated, “There is a possibility that there could be some people inside the collapsed building who may have died. I saw two people being pulled out from the rubble and taken to the hospital while rescue operations were ongoing. The emergency responders are not yet coordinated for efficient operations.”

However, a statement from the Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed that three people were rescued from the collapsed structure. The statement reads: “The FCT Police Command hereby confirms that yesterday, July 1, 2024, at about 8:40 PM, there was a building collapse at Unity House, Area 11 by Nkwere Street.

“In response to the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, promptly moved to the scene with multiple patrol teams as first responders to cordon off the area for possible rescue.

“Three victims were successfully evacuated from the collapsed building and rushed to the hospital for medical care.”
