The incident, which occurred on Thursday, March 27, involved a group of travellers passing through the town from Port Harcourt, Rivers State. They were allegedly intercepted by local vigilante operatives on suspicion of criminal activity, leading to their extrajudicial killing and the burning of their vehicle.
In a swift response, Governor Okpebholo visited the scene on Friday to assess the situation and engage with community stakeholders. The Governor condemned the attack in the strongest terms, describing the actions of the vigilante members as “barbaric, unlawful, and completely unacceptable in a civil society.”
“There is no justification for anyone to take the law into their own hands,” the Governor stated. “The duty of maintaining law and order rests solely with the constitutionally recognised security agencies. Any deviation from that is a threat to our collective peace and justice system.”
The Governor directed the Edo State Police Command and other security agencies to carry out a full and speedy investigation into the matter, and to ensure that all those found culpable are apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He also appealed to the local community to cooperate with security operatives in identifying the perpetrators, while commending the leadership of the Arewa community in the area for helping to de-escalate tensions and maintain calm in the wake of the attack.
“The restraint and maturity shown by community leaders, especially the Arewa leadership in Uromi, is commendable. Their role in preventing further breakdown of law and order deserves recognition,” he added.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding law and order across the state, and pledged to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families.
