The newly installed Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin, Ige Olakulehin 1, faces potential removal from office due to discrepancies in implementing the 2023 Olubadan chieftaincy declaration, according to authoritative sources gathered by DAILY POST……… CONTINUE READING
Oba Olakulehin ascended to the throne as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday, July 12, 2024, in a ceremony attended by dignitaries including the Sultan of Sokoto, Ooni of Ife, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, and other prominent figures.
However, the 2023 amendment to the Olubadan chieftaincy declaration, signed by Governor Seyi Makinde, introduces changes that diverge from provisions outlined in the 1957 declaration. Specifically, the amended declaration recognizes beaded crown Obas instead of High Chiefs, altering the process of candidate nomination and selection.
While the 1957 declaration mandates that the most Senior Chief in the line presenting a candidate should preside over nomination meetings, the 2023 amendment stipulates that the most Senior Beaded Crown Oba in the line not presenting the candidate should oversee such meetings. This adjustment signifies a shift in traditional succession protocols.
The discrepancy arose as Oba Olakulehin’s nomination meeting, held under the auspices of High Chief Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, did not adhere to the new requirement for oversight by a Beaded Crown Oba. Ladoja, a former governor of the state, is the only High Chief in Ibadan who has not adopted the beaded crown.
This deviation from the amended declaration raises concerns about the legitimacy of Oba Olakulehin’s ascension, potentially placing his tenure at risk pending further resolution of these issues.
DAILY POST continues to monitor developments surrounding this matter as stakeholders seek clarification and adherence to the amended chieftaincy protocols.
