Ondo Women’s Organizations Push For Gender Parity In Deputy Governor Position

As the November 16 gubernatorial elections approach in Ondo State, female voices within the region are amplifying their call for greater representation in the political landscape. Advocating for gender equality and inclusivity, various women’s groups united under the banner of the Ondo State Women Group to address what they perceive as a longstanding neglect of women in the state’s political sphere.

During their inaugural meeting held on Thursday, representatives from diverse women’s organizations convened and issued a compelling communique titled “Agitation for Gender Balance and Inclusiveness.” This document, read aloud by Mrs. Adebimpe Adeniyi, the esteemed state Chairperson of the National Council for Women Societies, articulates their collective demands and aspirations.

Central to their plea is the insistence on the nomination of female candidates for the position of deputy governor across all participating political parties in the upcoming 2024 gubernatorial elections. Additionally, they advocate for a substantial increase in budgetary allocation to the state Ministry of Women Affairs, emphasizing the importance of investing in programs and initiatives that uplift and empower women.

The communique underscores the unwavering commitment of these women to continue their justifiable agitation until their demands are not only heard but also acted upon by all political entities in Ondo State. They denounce the contradiction between professing inclusiveness, symbolized by the Yoruba word ‘Odatiwa,’ and relegating women to the confines of the proverbial ‘other room.’ Furthermore, they highlight the absence of female deputy governors in Ondo State, contrasting it with other states in Nigeria where women have held such positions.
