Gbemisola Oworu’s Harrowing Experience

For 27-year-old Gbemisola Oworu, the traumatic events of September 2019 still haunt her. A student at a tertiary institution in Ogun State, she was introduced to an online dating app by her roommate, who believed Oworu was too “boring” and focused on her studies. Encouraged by her friend, who was already in a relationship, Oworu decided to give it a try.

Initially cautious about meeting strangers online, Oworu began chatting with a 25-year-old man, Tobi, who claimed to be a graduate living with his uncle in Lagos. Their conversations grew longer, and Tobi seemed genuine, even video calling her from church, which made her believe he was a spiritual person. But what appeared to be a wholesome connection soon turned into a nightmare.

After two months of online interactions, Tobi invited Oworu to meet him in Lagos. Though her intuition raised red flags, Oworu decided to go, reassured by Tobi’s claim that his uncle would be out of town for the weekend. What started as a pleasant meeting soon spiraled into an ordeal. After spending time together at an eatery, things took a turn when Tobi brought Oworu to an apartment where he and his friends began to party. Despite her discomfort, Oworu reluctantly agreed to engage in sexual activity with Tobi, hoping to avoid further confrontation.

The situation escalated when Tobi’s friends took advantage of her one after the other. “That’s when I realised it was a setup,” Oworu recalls, clearly shaken by the betrayal. The following morning, Tobi handed her money, and she left. For weeks, Oworu struggled with insomnia and emotional trauma before eventually confiding in a nurse and seeking medical assistance.

A Tragic End for Precious Yusuf

Another devastating story involves 23-year-old Precious Yusuf, who traveled from Asaba, Delta State, to meet a man she had connected with on a dating site called iHappy. On October 22, 2024, Yusuf told a friend she was going to meet her online acquaintance. However, the next morning, her lifeless body was discovered along DLA Road in Asaba.

Yusuf had called her friend at around 7:30 am, saying she was on her way home—but that was the last anyone heard from her. Police investigations confirmed her identity, and an autopsy was ordered. Authorities have warned young women to be cautious when meeting individuals from dating platforms, with the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, advising extra vigilance.

The Growing Danger of Online Dating Platforms

Online dating platforms have become an integral part of social life, offering people the chance to find romantic partners, whether for short-term connections or long-term relationships. While some of these apps are free, others charge for premium features that offer better visibility and more interaction opportunities.

Despite their potential for positive connections, dating apps have also become a breeding ground for criminals who prey on unsuspecting users. Fake profiles, deceptive tactics, and emotional manipulation are common strategies used by online predators. They often create profiles with attractive photos and fake backstories to lure in potential victims, who are then tricked into meetings that can quickly turn violent or exploitative.
