These politicians firmly expressed their belief that it was undemocratic for Uzodimma to seek re-election, especially when the Orlu Senatorial District had held the reins of power in the state for a total of 20 out of the 24 years since the return of democracy in 1999.

This stance from the governorship candidates was one of the key resolutions reached during the 5th-anniversary celebration of the Egbu Declaration, which took place on a Saturday.

Other notable figures who endorsed this communique included Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ahamba, former Speakers of the state House of Assembly, Nnaemeka Maduagwu, as well as the chairman and secretary of the anniversary, Julius Onyenucheya and Martin Opara, respectively.

The resolution, in part, stated, “The people of Owerri zone collectively reaffirm their commitment to the principles outlined in the original Egbu Declaration, which stands against injustice in the Imo sociopolitical landscape.

Owerri zone and its inhabitants have suffered severe injustice, and we call upon our people not to accept the ongoing efforts to marginalize our zone within the Imo state political framework.”
