The Organised Labour has voiced its rejection of the Federal Government’s established committee responsible for negotiating wage revisions and other measures to alleviate the impacts of fuel subsidy removal on workers.

During a meeting between the leadership of Organised Labour and Senate principal officers led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Nigeria Labour Congress President, Joe Ajaero, expressed the labor union’s discontent.

Ajaero stated that the team, headed by Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, lacked negotiation capabilities and had lost the trust of the labor unions….CONTINUE READING

Ajaero highlighted the delay in the wage review committee’s activities, which had not convened two months after the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria.

He emphasized that the situation for Nigerians had worsened in the meantime. He noted that while labor leaders were deliberating on N537 per litre of fuel and the court had ruled for the status quo, the government unexpectedly raised the fuel price to N620 per litre.

He further explained that the Chief of Staff to the President, who has not actively participated in negotiations, caused delays in the process.

In response, Senate President Akpabio acknowledged that the present administration inherited a financially strained country with over N30 trillion in debt, despite saving N1 trillion through fuel subsidy removal.

He appreciated the patience of labor leaders and assured them that steps would be taken to alleviate the effects of fuel subsidy removal on workers and the general population soon.
