Abioye cautioned that such a shift could result in regret for Nigerians. Speaking in Osogbo on Wednesday during a program hosted by the League of Veteran Journalists, he criticized the idea of having a federal body, like INEC, handle local elections. He argued that federal agencies are already overwhelmed and that taking on local elections would exacerbate the problem.

He stated, “If INEC or another federal agency were to manage LG elections, we would eventually regret this decision.” Abioye highlighted that federal institutions are burdened by an extensive legislative list, leaving states with minimal responsibilities. He believes that those advocating for the dissolution of OSSIEC are often the same individuals who previously undermined the system.

Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments, Abioye noted that local government administration remains closely tied to the state government. He explained that while local governments now directly receive their funds from the federation account, their expenditure still requires approval from the state House of Assembly.

“The Supreme Court decision ensures that local government funds go directly to them, bypassing state intermediaries,” he said. “However, local governments still need state oversight for budgeting and spending.” Abioye also pointed out that local government operations, such as paying school teachers and handling chieftaincy matters, remain intertwined with state functions.
