Aregbesola had played a pivotal role in facilitating Oyetola’s emergence as the governor of Osun in the 2018 governorship election. However, the once-strong relationship soured in the lead-up to the 2022 Osun governorship poll, causing a division within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun state.
Despite the internal party strife, Oyetola, the incumbent governor at the time, secured the APC governorship ticket for a second term. Notably, Aregbesola and his loyalists opted out of participating in Oyetola’s re-election campaign activities. The outcome of the July 2022 governorship election saw Oyetola losing to Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The political fallout and Aregbesola’s accusations of betrayal have added further complexity to the political landscape in Osun.
