Speaking during the project’s flag-off, Otti emphasized that the market’s transformation would proceed in phases rather than an immediate demolition, addressing traders’ concerns about the project’s impact.
“This is a collective effort, and I assure you that no one will be shortchanged,” Otti stated. He underscored the necessity of the project to prevent potential disasters, referencing the incident of July 2023 and stressing the importance of timely action.
While acknowledging that the cost of securing new shops might increase due to rising building material prices, Otti promised financial assistance for those sincerely interested in acquiring new stalls. The revamped market will feature CCTV surveillance, reliable power supply, and other modern amenities to enhance safety and convenience for traders and their customers.
Otti also addressed concerns about the project’s cost, acknowledging the economic difficulties but reassuring that the new facilities will be significantly improved and more modern than the existing ones.
On Tuesday, a group of Ekeoha Market traders, led by Chris Uruakpa and Tochukwu Oguguo, staged a peaceful protest at the Abia State House of Assembly in Umuahia. They voiced support for the market’s remodelling but raised concerns about the potential loss of their shops or being priced out after the reconstruction is completed.
