This announcement was made on Friday through a statement by Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, the Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer at the British High Commission in Abuja.
Of the 82 scholars, 32 have been selected for the Chevening scholarships, while 50 have been awarded the Commonwealth scholarships.
“The British Government has granted 82 Nigerians the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to undertake a variety of master’s degrees and PhD programs in the UK in 2024,” the statement read. “This year, 32 scholars received Chevening scholarships, and 50 have been awarded Commonwealth scholarships so far.”
The selection process, known for its rigorous competitiveness, concluded with a pre-departure ceremony held on Thursday in Abuja for scholars from the capital and nearby regions. Another ceremony is scheduled for next week in Lagos, where Deputy Head of Mission, Abby Bernard, will host scholars from Lagos and surrounding areas.
At the Abuja event, British Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever, congratulated the scholars and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s educational development. “The UK remains committed to the educational development of Nigerians, ensuring a transparent and inclusive selection process across the board,” she said. Lever also encouraged the scholars to excel in their studies, act as exemplary ambassadors for Nigeria, and use their experiences abroad to foster positive change upon their return.
Additionally, Idowu Akintade, Director of Operations at the British Council Nigeria, urged the scholars to build strong networks and apply their newfound knowledge to contribute to Nigeria’s development priorities. “We hope the skills and knowledge you gain from this scholarship opportunity will prepare you to make a positive impact on Nigeria’s development priorities. I encourage you all to build strong networks and continue to be outstanding ambassadors of the prestigious Commonwealth and Chevening scholarships,” Akintade said
