Oyakhilome Sparks Storm As FG Warns Nigerians: ‘Cut Salt Or Face The Consequences

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a health advisory warning Nigerians against the excessive intake of salt.

This follows a controversial statement by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, founder of Loveworld Incorporated (Christ Embassy), who encouraged his followers to disregard medical advice and increase their salt consumption.

Oyakhilome claimed that Africans are being deliberately discouraged from consuming salt in order to increase their dependence on sodium-based medications. “They told you not to take salt so that you can buy their drugs—drugs that contain sodium,” he said.

In response, the Federal Government emphasized the importance of following professional medical guidance, warning that excessive salt intake poses severe health risks.

A statement signed by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, stressed the need to counter harmful misinformation — even when it comes from influential religious leaders. “While we respect the role of religious figures in our society, spreading inaccurate health claims endangers public wellbeing,” the ministry stated.

Balogun explained that while sodium is essential for nerve and muscle function, overconsumption is linked to serious health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems.

Quoting World Health Organization guidelines, he noted that adults should limit salt intake to no more than 5 grams per day—about one teaspoon.

The ministry concluded by advising Nigerians to rely on evidence-based dietary recommendations and avoid health advice that lacks scientific backing or endorsement by certified professionals.
