Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, issued a stern warning to local government officials against using his name for fraudulent activities. He revealed that during the December 2023 Christmas celebration, some officials from each council allegedly deducted N1 million from the approved funds, claiming it was intended for him. Addressing the issue during the flagging off of a three-day retreat for council chairmen and top functionaries across the state, Governor Oyebanji emphasized his commitment to transparency and urged officials to contact him directly if they hear of such activities. He asserted that his administration would not divert or touch allocations meant for local governments from the federation accounts.
The governor cautioned against using his name for fraudulent activities, promising legal consequences for anyone caught doing so. He encouraged local government officials to engage in consultative processes with communities to ensure projects benefit the masses directly.
Governor Oyebanji reminded the newly inaugurated officials of their responsibilities, urging them to consider the impact of their actions on the lives of the people. He emphasized the need for participatory governance and urged officials to execute projects that would be in the interest of the communities they serve.
Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Folorunso Olabode, highlighted the strategic importance of local governments in the developmental plans of Ekiti State. A resource person at the event, Senator Olubunmi Adetumbi, emphasized that the retreat aimed to establish an effective partnership framework between the state and local governments for cohesive operations, ensuring value for the citizens’ money.
