His anticipated resignation follows a recent meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, where he is said to have formally communicated his intention to enter the race. Although he did not address the media afterward, sources within government circles confirmed that he informed the President of his plans.

Reports suggest that his resignation could take place as early as today or before the end of the week.

This development comes weeks after political appointees were directed to resign if they intended to seek elective office. While Adelabu did not meet that initial deadline, his latest engagement with the President appears to have paved the way for his next move.

Following his meeting at the Villa, he was also said to have held consultations with prominent figures in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including former Osun State governor Adebisi Akande and former NNPC board chairman Pius Akinyelure.

Adelabu has previously shown strong interest in leading Oyo State, having contested the governorship election in 2019 under the APC and again in 2023 on the platform of the Accord Party.

With the APC scheduling its governorship primary for May 23, 2026, and fixing the nomination fee at N50 million, preparations for the race are already underway. The sale of nomination forms is expected to run from April 25 to May 2.

Once he officially declares his candidacy after resigning, Adelabu is expected to join other aspirants within the party, including Senator Sarafadeen Alli, who represents Oyo South, and Oyedele Alao, popularly known as Allow Alao.

His likely entry into the race is expected to intensify competition within the party as momentum builds ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
