Supreme Court Showdown Looms As Julius Abure Fights For Control of Labour Party

Published

on

The leadership crisis in the Labour Party has escalated further as Julius Abure has rejected the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal and has proceeded to challenge it at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja had earlier dismissed Abure’s suit and affirmed a previous ruling that removed him from his position as national chairman. The court also upheld the recognition of Nenadi Usman as the legitimate leader of the party.

The case stems from an earlier Federal High Court decision, which relied on a Supreme Court judgment that invalidated the process through which Abure assumed office. The courts maintained that his tenure had expired and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise Usman’s leadership.

Unhappy with the ruling, Abure insisted that he and his supporters do not accept the decision, maintaining that the party’s 2024 convention remains valid and continues to support his leadership claim.

He has now instructed his legal team to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court in a bid to overturn the Appeal Court’s verdict.

Abure described the judgment as unacceptable, arguing that it contradicts established legal principles and interferes in what he described as the internal affairs of a political party.

He also rejected claims that his tenure had expired, insisting that the March 27, 2024 convention held in Nnewi remains valid for four years and was not properly considered by the court.

He further argued that a separate meeting in Umuahia, which produced a caretaker committee, was unconstitutional, stating that only the party’s national chairman and national secretary have the authority to convene such meetings.

Abure concluded by reaffirming his determination to continue the legal battle, confirming that a formal appeal will be filed at the Supreme Court to challenge the appellate court’s decision.
