Oyo LG Chairmen Launch New Association

The communiqué did not specify the name of the new association or whether the Oyo LG chairmen plan to withdraw from the existing umbrella body, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria.

The communiqué, signed by Mr. Ibrahim Akintayo, the Public Relations Officer for the Oyo LG chairmen, stated: “At the general meeting of all local government councils in Oyo State, held on August 3, 2024, in Ibadan, it was unanimously resolved to form an umbrella association. This organization will be registered in accordance with Nigerian federal laws and will be represented by the chairmen of the local government councils.”

The statement further emphasized the association’s commitment to upholding democratic principles of local government as defined by the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) and ensuring meaningful development in local councils.

In related news, the chairmen expressed their support for Governor Seyi Makinde, praising his leadership and accomplishments. This development follows a recent Supreme Court ruling affirming the autonomy of local governments. The Court’s decision mandates direct allocation of funds to local governments from the Federation Allocation Account Committee, bypassing state governments.

Governor Makinde has since voiced his concerns and established committees to address the implications of the judgment.
