The communiqué, signed by Ibrahim Akintayo, the Public Relations Officer for the Oyo LG chairmen, stated: “At our general meeting on Saturday, 3rd August 2024, in Ibadan, it was agreed to establish an umbrella association to protect our people’s interests. This organization will be registered under Nigerian law and will include the chairmen of the local government councils as institutional members. The association will uphold the democratic principles of local government as defined in the 1999 Constitution and aim to deliver meaningful development at the local level.”

This move follows a recent Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy, which came after extensive deliberation. The court ruled that local government funds should be distributed directly to the councils from the Federation Allocation Account Committee, rather than being managed by state governments.
