Panic In North-Central: Afenifere Cries Out Over Renewed Deadly Attacks In Kwara, Kogi

The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has raised alarm over the recent wave of attacks on communities in Kwara and Kogi states, describing them as deliberate acts by “territory expansionists, terrorists, and disgruntled elements” bent on destabilising Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, in Ibadan, Afenifere condoled with the governments and people of the affected states, while also mourning victims of a recent boat mishap.

The group warned that the violent raids across Kwara, Kogi, and parts of the Middle Belt were a grim reminder of the persistent threats posed by terrorism to the South-West and the nation at large.

Ajayi noted that the tactics deployed in Kwara went far beyond kidnapping or cattle rustling. According to him, the calibre of weapons used, the boldness of the attackers, and the scale of destruction strongly suggest the involvement of powerful sponsors at both local and international levels.

Emphasising his deliberate use of the word “very,” Ajayi said this underscored the depth of support behind the insurgents.

Afenifere also linked the unrest to “illegal miners” and other shadowy actors benefiting from instability.

“Kwara, once hailed as the ‘State of Harmony’, has in recent times witnessed killings, destruction of property, and disruption of socio-economic life. Those aiding and abetting these criminals must remember that when the nation is destabilised, they too will not be spared,” the statement warned.

The group drew parallels with war-torn countries like Afghanistan and Libya, stressing that those who sponsor violence may eventually be consumed by it.

Ajayi further cautioned that the families of terror sponsors are not exempt from the consequences of the chaos they help to fuel.

“Hard-hearted elements in positions of power can be extremely dangerous. They disregard human rights and sow destruction without mercy. But history shows us that the fire they ignite often burns back into their own households,” he added.
