Pastor Giwa Criticizes Governors, Warns Of Potential Defiance To Supreme Court on LG Autonomy

Giwa argued that governors have assumed the role of emperors over local government affairs, suggesting they may resist the Supreme Court’s directive. The apex court’s decision on Thursday mandated an end to direct federal allocations to local councils, citing governors’ prolonged misuse of these funds.

“The Supreme Court’s verdict on local government autonomy is a positive step,” Giwa stated to DAILY POST. “However, I question whether governors will adhere to it. Over the years, Nigerian governors have misappropriated local government funds.”

Giwa criticized governors for appointing caretaker committees instead of allowing elected council chairmen, thereby usurping local governance. He pointed out that governors have undertaken projects that should be managed by local chairmen, citing widespread corruption and limited developmental projects in affected areas.

“Previously, local governments thrived under elected chairmen who were accountable to their constituents,” Giwa emphasized. “Governors have undermined this system, hindering grassroots development.”

He urged elected council chairmen to prioritize community-focused projects and called on the federal government to ensure equitable distribution of funds to local governments.

“Nigerians should hold their governors accountable and focus on local governance issues,” Giwa urged. “Politicians aspiring to lead local governments should use this opportunity to deliver meaningful development and uphold good governance.”

Giwa emphasized the importance of transparency in fund allocation, urging stakeholders to prevent misuse for personal gain.
