Pastor Removes Church Member From WhatsApp Group After She Questions ₦2m Sound System Appeal

A Nigerian man identified as @Themrbachelor on X, formerly Twitter, has sparked online debate after recounting how a pastor allegedly removed a female church member from the congregation’s WhatsApp group following a disagreement over financial assistance and fundraising.

According to the account shared by the X user, the woman had appealed to fellow church members for help in raising ₦80,000 to pay her child’s school fees, reportedly giving a three-day deadline for the payment.

However, the pastor allegedly responded by advising her to trust in God rather than publicise her personal challenges on social media.

The situation reportedly took an unexpected turn when the clergyman later announced that the church needed ₦2 million to purchase a new sound system. He reportedly encouraged members who loved the work of God to contribute generously towards the project.

Reacting to the appeal, the woman allegedly questioned the pastor’s position, asking why he was publicising the church’s financial needs if he believed in trusting God.

Her response reportedly angered the pastor, who subsequently removed her from the church’s WhatsApp group, according to the account shared online.

The incident has generated mixed reactions on social media, with users debating whether the pastor’s alleged action reflected a double standard in how faith and financial needs are treated within religious communities.

One commenter, Rojay, suggested that the woman’s response may have offended the pastor because it highlighted what the commenter perceived as inconsistency between encouraging individuals to rely on faith during personal difficulties and requesting financial contributions when the church needed assistance.

Another user, King Naeto, expressed a cynical view of the situation, while Xparte questioned the idea of being part of a church WhatsApp group. Rizzy, meanwhile, described the incident as a personal matter.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the controversy has renewed online discussions about the expectations placed on church members, the role of financial support in religious communities, and whether religious leaders should apply the same principles of faith to their own needs as they encourage others to do.
