President Tinubu declared the state of emergency in response to the unresolved political crisis in the state, leading to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the House of Assembly. Despite widespread criticism from political analysts, lawyers, and opposition leaders, the National Assembly approved the declaration on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

Appearing on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, March 21, 2025, Prof. Utomi condemned the lawmakers, stating that they had effectively murdered democracy in Nigeria. He expressed that he could no longer claim to come from a democratic nation, describing the decision as an insult to the Nigerian people. He emphasized that many of the current members of the National Assembly were absent when individuals like him fought for democracy.

“Democracy was murdered in Nigeria yesterday. I cannot publicly say I come from a country that operates democracy; it’s not a democracy. Even the way it was handled shows a blatant disregard for the sensitivity of the Nigerian people,” Utomi said.

He further criticized the National Assembly’s voting process, particularly the claim that there was no dissenting voice during the vote. According to Utomi, Nigerian leaders are systematically dismantling the country’s institutions, leaving the nation in a tragic state where the world mocks it.
