The Peoples Democratic Party has criticized both the Rivers State House of Assembly and the All Progressives Congress for their attempts to pressure Governor Siminalayi Fubara into taking actions that would defy the law.
The PDP described the renewed threats by lawmakers to impeach Fubara as not only embarrassing but also detrimental to the public interest of the state.
In a statement released in Port Harcourt on Monday, the State PDP Publicity Secretary, Sydney Gbara, voiced the party’s stance.
On Sunday, twenty-seven lawmakers aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory hinted at the possibility of revisiting Fubara’s impeachment as a last resort to fulfill their duties and uphold the constitution.
The Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, who conveyed the lawmakers’ position to the press, accused Fubara of acting unlawfully despite his signing of a presidential peace agreement during the state’s political crisis.
However, Gbara, the Rivers PDP Publicity Secretary, urged the lawmakers to cease disrupting the state’s peace and allow Fubara to focus on governance and fulfilling his mandate to the people.
Gbara emphasized that the legitimacy of the 27 lawmakers remained questionable following their defection from the PDP to the APC.
He stated, “Those individuals were initially beneficiaries of Governor Fubara’s magnanimity and peaceful disposition by signing the one-sided peace accord. Despite a court recognizing Rt. Hon Edison Ehie as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, they were allowed to continue operating.”
Gbara continued, “Their actions are not only embarrassing but also a public disgrace. The electorate trusted them, but they disappointed their constituents by pursuing a selfish agenda that exacerbated the state’s crisis.”
Regarding the threats of impeachment, Gbara dismissed them as hollow and self-serving. He asserted that the people of Rivers State would resist any attempt by the lawmakers to further their personal interests at the expense of public welfare.
