PDP Draws A Line In The Sand: Sowunmi Declares Party Won’t Be Trapped In Uncertain Alliances For 2027

Lagos—Despite efforts by the anti-Tinubu coalition, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to mobilize against President Tinubu in the 2027 Presidential election, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Mr. Segun Sowunmi, reiterated yesterday that the party will not be coerced into joining an unclear coalition.

This statement followed remarks by Clement Jimbo, the lawmaker representing Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State, who dismissed Atiku’s coalition as “the last kick of a dead horse.”

Sowunmi, who is also the convener of The Alternative, made the comments during an interview with TVC.

He emphasized that while individuals have the freedom to form alliances, political parties like the PDP should be approached with respect, clarity, and a well-defined structure.

Sowunmi stated, “Anyone proposing a coalition must differentiate individuals from political parties,” adding, “Individuals have every right to seek unity on their own terms.”

He continued, “For any political party, out of the 18 registered in this country, none would move forward without asking ‘What is the foundation of this alliance? How will we make it work? What roles are assigned? And what is the unifying vehicle?’”

He reminded the public that the PDP, founded in 1998 by distinguished leaders, was built on core values, one of which is to be a pan-Nigerian party that honors Nigeria’s diversity and respects the principles of zoning.
