PDP May Implode Over Chairmanship! Deputy Youth Leader Blasts Consensus Plans

The Deputy National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Timothy Osadolor, has cautioned against the adoption of a consensus arrangement in selecting the party’s next national chairman, asserting that every member has the constitutional right to contest.

In an interview with The Punch on Monday, Osadolor emphasized that the right to vie for any party position is enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and must not be undermined.

His comments come amid reports that influential party stakeholders are advocating for a consensus candidate ahead of the PDP’s National Convention scheduled for November 15 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Among those reportedly being considered for the chairmanship position are former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, former PDP chairman Kawu Baraje, and ex-Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed Makarfi.

Speaking about the convention, Osadolor said:
“The Constitution grants every Nigerian the right to vote and be voted for. There’s no legal barrier preventing someone from seeking a second term. In fact, by tradition, incumbents are usually given the right of first refusal. That does not negate the rights of other aspirants who are free to make their case to the delegates.”

He continued, “It is the duty of the delegates to assess all contenders and decide if someone deserves another chance or not. Just like no one can stop a sitting President from contesting again, it is left to the electorate to decide his fate at the polls.

The same principle applies here. We must allow internal democracy to thrive and protect the aspirations of all party members. That’s why any attempt to disrupt this process will be opposed.”

Addressing the push for consensus, Osadolor described it as potentially harmful to the democratic process:
“Consensus, though a democratic tool, can be dangerous when misused.

It can be a form of suppression. Every interested aspirant should present their manifesto to the delegates and allow the convention to determine the most suitable candidate.”

He further called for early sensitisation and mobilization at all party levels:
“Anyone planning to run should begin their campaign now. Everyone has a constituency – their state, local government, and ward.

It’s essential we raise delegates who are driven by credibility and not financial inducement. That way, their votes will reflect the true mood of the party and the country. We must avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.”
