The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its readiness to combat electoral fraud in the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, vowing to uphold fairness and democracy. The party emphasized its determination to prevent any undemocratic takeover of state leadership, regardless of the stature of those involved.
Scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission for September 21 and November 16 respectively, the Edo and Ondo governorship elections will feature Asue Ighodalo and Agboola Ajayi as PDP candidates.
During the inauguration of the National Campaign Councils for these elections, PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum affirmed the party’s stance against electoral malpractice. He addressed recent statements by President Bola Tinubu about winning Edo for the All Progressives Congress (APC), asserting, “Edo is not Lagos,” and reaffirming that PDP would uphold democratic principles without allowing any electoral theft.
Damagum highlighted the party’s democratic credentials and expressed confidence in retaining Edo State, citing Governor Godwin Obaseki’s achievements and the party’s strong record in the region. He pledged that election results would not be announced at night, aiming for transparency throughout the electoral process.
Regarding Ondo State, Damagum acknowledged past challenges but expressed optimism about the PDP’s prospects, urging vigilance against potential electoral manipulations by opponents.
Chairman of Edo PDP Governorship Campaign Council, Ahmadu Fintiri, and Chairman of the Ondo State National Campaign Council, Ademola Adeleke, echoed Damagum’s sentiments, emphasizing their commitment to securing victory in both states through rigorous campaigning and leveraging public support.
