The formal takeover of the ADC structure took place on Wednesday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. At the event, former Senate President David Mark was announced as the acting National Chairman of the party, while former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, was named acting National Secretary.
In a statement shared via his handle on Thursday morning, Obi stressed that the coalition is committed to unity, sacrifice, and a shared mission to deliver competent and compassionate leadership in the 2027 general elections.
Explaining the rationale behind the move, the former Labour Party presidential candidate said the decision stemmed from serious introspection on Nigeria’s current challenges and what must be done to restore the nation’s path to progress.
His statement read:
“Yesterday, coalition members officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as our platform for the 2027 General Elections, with Senator David Mark serving as National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.
“Our shared commitment is to work collectively and selflessly to ensure Nigeria gets the kind of leadership it urgently needs—one that is competent, capable, and compassionate, with the people’s welfare at heart.
“This decision was not made lightly. It was the result of deep reflection on where our country stands today and what must be done to move it forward.
“No single group can transform Nigeria alone. To dismantle the entrenched systems that perpetuate poverty and insecurity, we must build inclusive bridges, even when those alliances may be uneasy.”
