Peter Obi Discusses Causes Behind Recurrent National Grid Collapses

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, asserts that the persistent national grid collapses pose a significant obstacle to the nation’s economic progress. As a former Governor of Anambra State, Obi calls upon the federal government to establish a technical task force comprising experts to tackle the recurring grid failures.

The recent April 15th blackout, marking the third such incident in 2024, underscores the urgency of addressing this issue. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) attributes the collapse to a fire outbreak at the Afam power generating station, although they claim to have fully restored the grid.

Obi, through his Presidential Campaign Organisation spokesman Yunusa Tanko, emphasizes the need for a task force composed of genuine professionals, devoid of political affiliations. He suggests that such a team could swiftly rectify common issues like fire outbreaks, which often lead to system failures, thereby enhancing power availability in the short term.

The proposed task force aims to improve coordination between TCN and distribution companies (DisCos), eliminating load rejection and holding all stakeholders accountable for their technical duties. Obi envisions this approach as a means to rapidly enhance power supply while the government formulates a comprehensive national electricity policy and implementation strategy, bridging the gap between federal and sub-national electricity reforms.
