Peter Obi Fires Back At Critics: “Don’t Vilify Those Exposing Nigeria’s Governance Failures

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s negative reputation in the international community, urging the government to take note.

In a statement released on Tuesday titled “What should we make of all the negative remarks about Nigeria?”, Obi responded to comments made by Kemi Badenoch, the UK Conservative Party leader, who criticized Nigeria’s poor governance. He believes the statement should be a wake-up call for both citizens and the government to address the country’s issues.

Obi condemned the backlash against Badenoch for speaking out, pointing out that the UK leader’s remarks were a truthful reflection of Nigeria’s struggles. He referred to a previous travel advisory issued by a prominent Nigerian newspaper, which described Nigeria’s poor infrastructure and insecurity, challenges that remain unresolved.

The travel advisory also highlighted the deficiencies in Nigeria’s healthcare system, noting the lack of essential medications and poor-quality healthcare facilities, issues that continue to persist. Obi emphasized that such international criticisms should encourage Nigerians to take a more critical look at the country’s situation and work towards positive change, rather than attacking those who bring attention to these problems.
