Peter Obi Questions Tinubu’s 2025 Budget Increase What Nigerians Need To Know?

This comes after the federal government submitted a request to the National Assembly, seeking an increase in the 2025 budget from ₦49.7 trillion to ₦54.2 trillion.

Responding via a post on X Friday morning, Obi emphasized that Nigerians deserve clarity on how public funds are being allocated to ensure they are effectively used for national development and the welfare of the people.

He pointed out that citizens are still awaiting a comprehensive report on the execution and spending of the Renewed Hope budget, which was passed in December 2023, to verify that the funds were properly managed for the country’s progress and the well-being of its citizens.

Obi wrote:
“Yesterday, I came across reports of the Budget of Restoration being increased to ₦54 trillion due to higher revenue projections.

“While the revenue sources were outlined, there was no corresponding breakdown of expenditures to justify this increase. For the sake of transparency and accountability, Nigerians need to understand how these resources—generated from their efforts—are being allocated to ensure they are prudently spent on the nation’s growth and the people’s welfare.

“Such funds should prioritize essential sectors like education, healthcare, security, and poverty reduction.

“Moreover, Nigerians are still waiting for a full account of the Renewed Hope budget, passed in December 2023, to confirm it has been effectively utilized for future development and the well-being of the people.

“I urge the National Assembly to take this opportunity to obtain and publicly disclose the complete details of the 2024 Renewed Hope budget. Transparency in this regard is essential for ensuring accountability, learning from previous budgets, and making informed decisions to propel national progress.

“As we move toward approving the 2025 Budget of Restoration, let us prioritize openness, accountability, and the welfare of Nigerians. We owe this to ourselves, our children, and the future of our great nation.”
