Obi disclosed this during a condolence visit to the late football legend’s family on Saturday morning, a day after Rufai was laid to rest in Lagos.

During the visit, Obi sympathized with the family, urging them to remain strong while offering prayers for the repose of the ex-international. He was accompanied by fellow former Nigerian player, Sylvanus Okpala.

Receiving Obi at their Amuwo Odofin residence were Rufai’s younger brother, Bruce, his sisters, Bosede and Dele, alongside other relatives. Obi spent about an hour with them before signing the condolence register. Bruce, who resides in Spain, had returned to Nigeria for his brother’s burial.

Speaking during the visit, Obi said:
“I’m here to express my deepest condolences over the passing of our great goalkeeper. Unfortunately, I was unaware of the burial date until yesterday while I was in Abuja. I flew into Lagos this morning and came here directly from the airport. Had I known earlier, I would have been present at the burial. Please accept my sympathy. May his soul rest in peace.”

The family, visibly touched by the visit, expressed their gratitude.

“We can’t thank you enough. We felt neglected by the authorities, but your visit has truly consoled us and lifted our spirits. We are honoured by your presence. Thank you, Your Excellency,” Bruce said.

Some family members could not hide their excitement upon seeing Obi in the house where Rufai, popularly known as Dodo Mayana, once lived.
