Speaking during a recent visit to Washington, D.C., Obi stressed the importance of active citizen participation in safeguarding the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Anambra State governor said he would make every effort within his capacity to ensure votes are protected during the polls. However, he emphasized that the ultimate responsibility lies with the electorate, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant at polling units until votes are counted and results are properly documented.
According to Obi, elections can only be credible when voters stay behind to monitor the counting process rather than leaving immediately after casting their ballots.
“Elections are rigged in Nigeria because Nigerians want them to be rigged,” Obi said.
“I will do everything possible to protect votes in the 2027 election, but it is up to Nigerians to decide whether their votes will count or not.”
He further noted that voters must remain at their polling units and insist on transparency throughout the voting and counting process.
“If you vote and stay at your polling unit, insisting that your vote must count, it will count. But many Nigerians vote and go home, only to return later to prayer gatherings, believing that prayers alone will determine the outcome,” he stated.
Obi maintained that Nigeria’s challenges are rooted in poor leadership and called on citizens to become more actively involved in strengthening democratic institutions and electoral accountability.
