Peter Obi Reveals Why He Chose Kwankwaso As His 2027 Running Mate

Speaking in an interview with The Sun, Obi said his choice was driven by their shared commitment to tackling poverty through education and human capital development.

According to the former Anambra State governor, Kwankwaso’s long-standing belief in using education as a tool for social and economic transformation aligns closely with his own vision for Nigeria.

“Kwankwaso has the philosophy of pulling people out of poverty,” Obi said.

“I have the same philosophy. Kwankwaso believes in education. You cannot change society without education.”

Obi stressed that education would remain one of the major priorities of an NDC administration, insisting that investing in human capital is critical to Nigeria’s development.

“If you look at my , formerly Twitter, I made it clear that I will emphasise education. Education is going to change society.

“Nigeria must be seen to form its innermost human capital, which we need to develop. Kwankwaso believes in this. I do. We have synergy,” he stated.

The NDC flagbearer also dismissed reports of any rift between him and Kwankwaso, insisting they remain united and are working together ahead of the January 2027 presidential election.

Obi Spotted Shopping in Abuja

Meanwhile, Peter Obi was seen shopping at a supermarket in Abuja on Saturday, months after he drew public attention with a viral video showing him buying groundnuts at the Utako Market.

Photos of the visit were shared by his former 2023 presidential campaign photographer, Esther Umoh, on her account.

According to Umoh, Obi stopped at a branch of H-Medix Supermarket to purchase a few personal items before spending time interacting with members of staff and fellow shoppers.

“Peter Obi today stopped by a branch of H-Medix Supermarket to pick up a few personal items,” she wrote.

Umoh said the outing reflected Obi’s connection with ordinary Nigerians, arguing that experiencing the same markets and prices as other citizens gives him firsthand insight into the country’s economic realities.

“By experiencing the same markets, prices, and economic conditions as everyone else, he gains a firsthand understanding of the challenges families face daily,” she said.

She added that Obi warmly interacted with employees and customers during the visit.

“He also took out time to interact warmly with members of staff and fellow shoppers. A reminder that leadership is ultimately about staying connected to the people you serve,” she wrote.

Obi served as governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014. He was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election and is now the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election.
