Police Call On FCT Medical Staff To Report Gunshot Cases Amid #EndBadGovernance Protests

In a statement released on Friday by spokesperson Josephine Adeh, the command explained that they had been involved in a fierce gunfight with hoodlums who exploited the ongoing hunger protests. These criminals used the protests as cover to engage in widespread extortion and assault along the Lugbe area of the FCT.

Adeh detailed that following distress calls regarding these activities, which began on August 1, 2024, the hoodlums had blocked the Lugbe section of the Shehu Musa Yaradua Expressway, leading to a confrontation with police that resulted in several injuries.

The police are advising all medical facilities in the Federal Capital Territory to be alert for potential gunshot victims and to report such cases to the police, as required by the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act 2017. This legislation mandates urgent medical treatment for gunshot victims and requires that their details be shared with law enforcement to assist in addressing the security situation.

Commissioner of Police Bennett Igweh has warned against using the protest as a cover for criminal activities such as robbery, assault, and vandalism. He assured the public that police and security agents are on high alert to prevent such crimes and maintain order.

The police command also expressed appreciation for the cooperation of FCT residents and promised to take all necessary measures to protect their rights and property during the protests.
