SP Bright Edafe, the spokesperson for the command, disclosed this development to reporters in Warri on Thursday. According to Edafe, the arrests were made over the weekend at undisclosed locations in Warri, following diligent efforts by a joint team of officers from the Orerokpe division and operatives from the Force Intelligence Unit, Abuja.
Investigations had indicated that the spate of kidnappings in the Warri area was orchestrated by Yakubu Ya’u, operating in Oha and Ughwagba Communities within Okpe Local Government Area. Ya’u and his gang reportedly targeted unsuspecting residents for ransom.
“On May 11, through a coordinated effort between our operatives and those from the Force Intelligence Unit, Abuja, we zeroed in on the suspect’s hideout in Warri,” Edafe stated. “Thanks to the swift action of the DPO, Orerokpe division, who led his patrol teams, we successfully apprehended the prime suspect after a thorough search.”
Further interrogation of the initial suspect led to the identification and subsequent arrest of two additional members of the gang, one of whom is a Cameroonian national.
Edafe asserted that these individuals were allegedly behind multiple kidnapping incidents not only in Orerokpe but also in Sapele, Warri, and surrounding areas. Victims have reportedly identified them in connection to the crimes.
The suspects cooperated with the police, leading them to Ughwagba Community in Okpe Local Government Area, where authorities recovered two automatic pump-action guns, a live cartridge, and a knife.
While preliminary investigations are ongoing, the Delta State Police Command remains resolute in its efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang, ensuring justice for victims and bolstering security within the state.
