Police In Delta Deny Shooting At Women Protesters Cite
The Delta State Police Command has refuted claims of its officers firing at protesting women in Ughelli North Local Government Area. SP Bright Edafe, the command’s spokesperson, clarified the stance in a statement on Monday night, May 6, 2024. Reports indicated that women from Oteri-Ughelli protested alleged police harassment and extortion. During the dispersal, a middle-aged woman was reportedly shot, and others were injured. The protesters carried placards decrying police actions. Edafe countered these reports, labeling them as “false narratives.”
He explained that officers dispersed the protesters using teargas after they allegedly assaulted a policeman at the Area command premises. The Command emphasized that no shootings occurred during the protest, maintaining the use of teargas was justified for crowd control.
