The Ondo State Police Command has officially verified that Omowunmi Aduloju, a 17-year-old girl, who fatally stabbed her aunt, suffers from a mental illness.
Reports from LIB disclose that the victim, Funmilayo Adelayi, an employee of the Ondo State Ministry of Finance, was discovered deceased in her residence at Premier Estate, located in the Oda area of Akure on Sunday, March 17, 2024.
The teenager, known as Wumi, was subsequently apprehended by law enforcement, where she admitted to the stabbing incident that led to her aunt’s demise on March 13, 2024.
SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the spokesperson for the command, corroborated this information on Sunday, citing a medical report obtained from the psychiatric hospital where the suspect had received treatment, confirming her mental illness.
“On Sunday, March 17, 2024, the police were alerted to the discovery of a deceased woman in her mid-50s within her residence, already in an advanced stage of decomposition,” the statement read.
“Upon investigation, signs of violence (stab wounds) were evident, and a knife was recovered at the crime scene.
“Initial inquiries indicated that the deceased cohabited with her niece, Omowunmi Aduloju, aged 17, who had suddenly disappeared, locking the door behind her.
“The foul odor emanating from the residence alerted neighbors, who then notified the deceased’s sister.
“Upon her arrival, the sister peered through a window and observed the body on the floor, prompting the notification of law enforcement.
“The badly decomposed remains were subsequently removed for preservation.
“The teenager was subsequently apprehended by the police and questioned regarding the fate of her guardian. She confessed to the stabbing, attributing her actions to her aunt’s persistent demands for her to adhere to prescribed medication.
“Family members revealed that the adolescent had been under her late aunt’s care since the age of six but developed mental health issues in 2023, leading to her admission to a psychiatric facility within the state.”
Odunlami-Omisanya further stated that the adolescent had been discharged from psychiatric care and entrusted to the deceased for continued monitoring.
“The medical history provided by the psychiatric hospital corroborated the claims made,” she added.
“The suspect is presently under police custody in a medical facility to prevent harm to herself or others.
