Police Nab Prisoner Who Escaped During Borno Flood

Naija News reports that the state experienced severe flooding a few days ago, leading to the submersion of many buildings and the escape of wild animals from a local livestock park. The flood caused the prison facility’s fence to collapse, allowing several inmates to escape.

Initially, prison officials denied any escapes during the flood but later admitted that 274 inmates were missing. On Tuesday, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the Police Public Relations Officer for Borno, announced that Abubakar Mohammed, 27, who was serving a sentence for culpable homicide, had been apprehended.

Wakil stated, “On September 15, 2024, at about 3:00 PM, a resident of Bulakara Ward in Gubio Local Government Area reported seeing Abubakar in Gubio town. He had escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Center in Maiduguri due to the flood-induced collapse of the fence. A quick response by a police patrol team led to his arrest. Abubakar will be handed over to the Nigerian Correctional Service, and efforts are underway to locate other escaped inmates in the area.”
