Colonel Robert Netshiunda, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, confirmed on Monday that the 48-year-old officer died by suicide at a hotel in uMhlanga. The officer had fled the scene of the crash, which occurred early Saturday morning on Phoenix Highway.

The victim, identified as 26-year-old Phumla Mtshali, was struck by the officer’s vehicle. Reaction Unit SA (Rusa) received a report of a damaged black Toyota Fortuner, equipped with blue lights and sirens, found on a local farmer’s property. The vehicle’s registration plates had been removed, but the license disc information led authorities to discover that the vehicle was reported stolen from Phoenix police station.

Rusa’s Prem Balram later confirmed that the vehicle was linked to the hit-and-run incident. Mtshali’s family reported the incident to the Phoenix police station, leading to the opening of a culpable homicide case.

Netshiunda revealed that the officer, who had been the last person with the state vehicle, went to the Phoenix police station to report it as stolen shortly after the homicide case was registered. On Monday morning, police learned that this sergeant, implicated in the hit-and-run, had taken his own life.
