Police Officer In Aba Under Arrest For Allegedly Fatally Shooting Local Businessman

The Abia State Police Command has apprehended a police officer accused of fatally shooting Emmanuel Michael Okocha, a businessman from Abiriba, in Aba.

Mr. Okocha tragically lost his life on Wednesday, April 17, along Aba-Owerri road after purportedly refusing to offer a bribe to certain policemen, despite possessing a valid vehicle license. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Friday, April 19.

Following this incident, the Abiriba community, situated in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, penned a letter to the authorities, urging for the alleged perpetrator, an officer attached to the Rapid Response Unit of the Nigerian Police Force, to be held accountable.

In a statement issued by ASP Maureen Chinaka, the spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, the arrest of the officer was confirmed on Saturday, April 20. The statement assured that appropriate disciplinary measures have been initiated, and the officer will face legal consequences.

The preliminary inquiry revealed that Police Corporal Obagi Njok, stationed at Abayi Police Division under Abia State Police Command, fired at Mr. Emmanuel Okocha along Aba-Owerri Road. The police assured that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure justice is served, with the involvement of the bereaved family and stakeholders throughout the process.

The Abia State Police Command condemned the incident, expressing regret and offering condolences to the family, friends, and well-wishers of the deceased. They reaffirmed their commitment to upholding professionalism and the rule of law, unequivocally denouncing any form of misconduct or indiscipline among their officers.
