According to a statement released by Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations at the PSC, the report in question was seen as a deliberate attempt to tarnish Arase’s reputation.

The statement highlighted that upon learning of the publication, Arase promptly instructed his legal representatives to take action. A letter dated February 23, 2024, was sent to Mr. Nurudeen Akewushola, Victoria Bamas, and Mr. Dayo Aiyetan, who were respectively identified as the writer, editor, and executive director of ICIR. The letters from Arase’s solicitors contested the allegations made against him, asserting that they were baseless and aimed at undermining his integrity. The solicitors demanded an immediate retraction of the defamatory publication within a specified timeframe, warning of legal consequences if this was not complied with.

Subsequently, on March 22, 2024, Arase filed a civil lawsuit against Mr. Nurudeen Akewushola, Victoria Bamas, Mr. Dayo Aiyetan, and the registered trustees of ICIR at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, with the case assigned the number CV/1937/2024. It emphasized his background as a legal practitioner and holder of a Doctorate in Philosophy in Law, as well as his current role as head of the Police Service Commission.
