Political Earthquake In Adamawa: 21 LG Chairmen, 226 Councillors Dump PDP For APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered a major setback in Adamawa State after 21 local government chairmen and 226 councillors defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Bush Radio Academy, the elected officials announced their decisions through resignation letters addressed to their respective PDP ward chairmen. The defections reportedly began emerging late on Monday, October 19, and continued into the early hours of Tuesday.

Most of the officials reportedly cited personal reasons for leaving the PDP, explaining that they had consulted their families and political associates before making the decision.

Chairman of Demsa Local Government Area, Akham Jalo, said his decision to join the APC followed consultations with his family, political associates, stakeholders and residents of the area.

Jalo explained that his defection was motivated by the desire to align with the political direction of Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and attract more development to his local government.

“My decision to join the APC was informed by the need to align with the progressive vision of His Excellency, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, and to attract more dividends of democracy to the people of Demsa,” he stated.

The Adamawa State APC Publicity Secretary, Victor Dogo, confirmed the development, disclosing that all 21 local government chairmen, area development administrators and 226 councillors in the state had joined the ruling party.

“All the 21 local government area chairmen, area development administrators and the 226 councillors in the state have moved into our party,” Dogo said.

He added that the officials chose to join the APC to align themselves with Governor Fintiri, whom he described as their political godfather.

The mass defection comes months after the affected chairmen and councillors secured their positions under the PDP platform in the local government election held on June 13, 2026. They were subsequently inaugurated on June 15.

Their move to the APC follows Fintiri’s earlier defection from the PDP to the ruling party, which occurred approximately four months before the local government officials were inaugurated.

Since their inauguration, there had been expectations that the council officials might eventually follow the governor into the APC.

The development represents a significant shift in Adamawa State’s political landscape, with the ruling party gaining the support of a substantial number of elected local government officials, while the PDP faces the loss of key grassroots political figures.
