Political Earthquake In Edo: Senator Neda Imasuen Dumps LP, Joins APC

The Senator for Edo South, Neda Imasuen, has announced his resignation from the Labour Party and his defection to the APC, attributing his move to persistent internal disputes within the LP and the need to better serve his constituents’ political interests.

The defection of Senator Neda Imasuen from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was officially announced during Wednesday’s Senate plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read the senator’s letter conveying his decision.

In the letter, Senator Imasuen explained that his move followed “extensive consultations” with constituents and key political stakeholders in Edo South.

“I hereby formally inform this distinguished Senate, through the office of the Senate President, of my resignation from the Labour Party and my decision to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the letter read.

He stated that the switch was aimed at securing better visibility and access to opportunities for his senatorial district by aligning with the ruling party.

“This decision is the result of comprehensive consultations with my constituents, political allies, and supporters across Edo South, who strongly believe that joining a party with national influence will better position our people for political and developmental relevance,” he said.

Imasuen also pointed to persistent internal crises within the Labour Party as a driving force behind his departure.

“My resignation stems from unresolved internal conflicts and leadership issues within the Labour Party, which have undermined my ability to effectively serve and fulfill my mandate to the people of Edo South,” he wrote.

He emphasized that the defection aligns with his commitment to the developmental goals and “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Despite the political realignment, Imasuen reaffirmed his loyalty to his constituents and his commitment to democratic governance.

“I remain dedicated to serving my people and upholding the core values of democracy within this Senate,” he concluded, requesting that his letter be officially read and recorded in the Senate’s proceedings.

Senator Imasuen’s defection adds to the list of lawmakers who have exited the Labour Party amid its ongoing internal challenges, as political positioning intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
