Obiora Okonkwo, a prominent contender in the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Anambra State, has formally withdrawn from the race, citing troubling developments that conflict with his values and concerns for the safety of his supporters.
In a heartfelt letter addressed to his supporters, Okonkwo described his decision as “difficult but necessary.” He noted that after a thorough assessment of the ongoing primary process in Anambra, he could no longer continue his pursuit of the party’s ticket.
“After a careful evaluation and reflection on the current state of the APC primary election process in Anambra, I have decided to withdraw my aspiration for the party’s governorship ticket. This decision is difficult but necessary due to developments that contradict my core principles and values. No political ambition is worth risking the lives of my supporters,” he wrote.
Although he did not detail the exact issues that prompted his exit, Okonkwo emphasized that the safety and well-being of his supporters remained his top priority.
Despite stepping down from the race, Okonkwo reaffirmed his dedication to Anambra’s progress and Nigeria’s overall development. He pledged unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and vowed to continue contributing to national growth.
“My passion for public service remains unwavering. I will continue to support the socio-economic and political advancement of Anambra and Nigeria. I also remain committed to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s development initiatives for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he added.
Okonkwo expressed deep appreciation to his supporters, political allies, and stakeholders for their steadfast support throughout his campaign. He also thanked the people of Anambra for their enthusiasm and engagement.
“I am grateful to my political associates, stakeholders, and supporters within and beyond the APC. Your trust and encouragement have been invaluable. It has been an honour to connect with so many passionate and committed Anambrarians,” he concluded.
Prior to Okonkwo’s withdrawal, two other aspirants—Chukwuma Umeoji and Paul Chukwuma—had also exited the APC primary race. Umeoji cited extensive consultations with supporters, while Chukwuma resigned from the party entirely.
Following these developments, the APC governorship ticket is now being contested by Nicholas Ukachukwu, Valentine Ozigbo, Johnbosco Onunkwo, and Edozie Madu.
