Political Opportunists Behind Demands For Mahmood Yakubu’s Sack – AYCF ReactsThe Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has strongly condemned the renewed calls for the removal of Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Reaffirming its full support for Yakubu and the INEC, the AYCF stressed that the calls for his dismissal stem from disgruntled politicians who view power as an end rather than a means to serve the people.
The statement read: “In recent weeks, there has been a chorus of voices, motivated by personal gains and political opportunism, demanding the removal of Professor Yakubu. These calls reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of INEC’s role and leadership under his stewardship.”
The AYCF pointed out that under Yakubu’s leadership, INEC has consistently upheld the principles of fairness, transparency, and integrity, ensuring that the will of the Nigerian people is respected in the electoral process.
“Professor Yakubu’s leadership has ensured that the elections are credible, and the process has garnered both domestic and international recognition for its transparency. These are facts that his critics conveniently overlook in their baseless claims,” the statement continued.
The forum specifically condemned the involvement of certain individuals, whom it described as “peripheral figures,” trying to undermine the credibility of INEC for personal and political motives.
“We find it deeply troubling that such people, with ulterior motives, are trying to tarnish the reputation of an institution crucial to the health of our democracy,” AYCF stated. “Those behind these efforts must be held accountable for their actions, as this isn’t just an attack on an individual, but on the integrity of the democratic process itself.”
The group warned that these divisive tactics threaten to undermine public trust in electoral institutions, which is vital for national stability and progress. The AYCF called on all political leaders and citizens to reject such destructive efforts and instead focus on fostering unity and progress through constructive dialogue.
