Since leaving office in September 2021, Babandede had been linked to potential gubernatorial ambitions in Jigawa. However, he revealed that while supporters urged him to run for governor in 2023, he chose to respect the current leadership under Governor Umar Namadi and instead focus on a senatorial path. Babandede praised Governor Namadi’s performance and affirmed that the governor has every right to seek re-election.

According to Premium Times, Babandede’s APC registration on Sunday was largely procedural, as he has long maintained active involvement in the party. He campaigned for both Governor Namadi and President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 elections, reinforcing his strong party connections.

On declaring his senatorial ambition, Babandede said his decision was influenced by repeated appeals from the people of Jigawa Northeast. He emphasized that his focus would be on legislative duties, safeguarding constituents’ rights, and fostering effective collaboration between the legislature, state government, and federal authorities to ensure that development projects are impactful and not duplicated.
