The Kogi Central lawmaker had presented her case before the global body, calling for intervention against what she described as an injustice.
Following her submission, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) assured Senator Natasha that it would investigate the matter, pledging to hear from both sides before taking further action.
Senate Rejects Natasha’s Allegations
In response, the Nigerian Senate, through its leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, addressed the IPU in a formal letter dismissing Natasha’s claims.
The letter, read by Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, refuted allegations that the suspension was linked to sexual harassment accusations.
“Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for gross misconduct and unruly behavior, not due to allegations of sexual harassment or assault. The Nigerian Senate firmly rejects the misinformation being circulated regarding her six-month suspension,” the letter stated.
Call for Investigation Amidst Senate’s Denial
Despite the Senate’s defense, Hon. Ogbara urged a thorough investigation into Natasha’s allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, emphasizing that all procedural rules were followed before her suspension.
Last week, Natasha was suspended, a move that has ignited nationwide debate.
Before her suspension, she had submitted a petition accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment, which lawmakers dismissed. Even after filing another petition, her suspension proceeded.
Senator Natasha has vowed to continue her fight against what she calls “injustice,” while Akpabio has denied the allegations, maintaining that he has never assaulted women.
