Polytechnic Academic Staff Reveal Date For Planned StrikeThe Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced a two-week warning strike set to begin on December 2, 2024. ASUP President, Kpanja Shamnah, made the announcement after the union’s 112th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja. He stated that the appointment of the Rector at Nekede Polytechnic was done in violation of due process and the Federal Polytechnics Act, an act the union believes has been repeatedly disregarded by the government.
Shamnah reminded journalists of the 15-day ultimatum ASUP had previously issued to the federal government and other relevant agencies to review and reverse decisions that conflict with the Polytechnics Act and other sector governance frameworks. He explained that the union had raised several issues during its NEC meeting, including concerns over the improper appointment of principal officers in both federal and state-owned polytechnics.
“The appointment process at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, as well as the appointment of a Rector at the Federal Polytechnic, Wannune, were glaring examples of the ongoing breaches,” Kpanja said. “Additionally, the non-release of the 2023 NEEDS Assessment intervention funds and the unresolved issue of the Scheme of Service for Polytechnics have further escalated tensions.”
He also highlighted the increasing interference of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in the functions of Academic Boards at polytechnics, particularly regarding the admission of Higher National Diploma (HND) students.
ASUP’s warning strike will take effect from December 2 unless the federal government takes immediate action to address these longstanding concerns.
